Even though Medicare has been been covering the cost of colon cancer screening since 1998, most Medicare patients are still not getting colonscopy. Maybe it's fear of the unknown.Colonoscopy is the gold standard test for colon cancer. Using colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist can detect early signs of colon cancer. Perhaps mindful of the importance of getting a colonoscopy, Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Mavericks and maybe the Cubs wrote about his colonoscopy in his blog (see below).

Screening guidelines for colon cancer. According to the Cleveland Clinic, "People with no symptoms or any of the risk factors in moderate or high-risk group are considered average risk at developing colorectal cancer. These people should be screened for colorectal cancer starting at age 50". People with increased risk such as a family history or personal history of polyps would certainly need a colonoscopy sooner. Mark Cuban writes "I usually don't talk about personal issues, but I thought this was important to share...I'm getting to that age where it pays to be proactive and start getting tested for the myriad of things that can go wrong with my body. One of the things I wanted to get over with is a check for colon cancer. Although I'm officially younger than the "suggested age" for a colonoscopy, I wanted to get it out of the way. I had read and heard too many stories about people who found polyps and how if "they had only caught them a little sooner" it would be no big deal to remove them. So I set my appointment and went for it".

"Bottom line is that your life just might depend on getting tested for colon cancer. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. Its truly easy and breezy. Do it".
